Drivers who cause death by dangerous driving will now face up to life in prison with new rules being brought in this week.
From Tuesday 28 June 2022, judges will now have the power to hand down life sentences to those who commit death by dangerous driving and those who commit death by careless drivers whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
The maximum sentence was up to 14 years' imprisonment prior to the changes to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts (PCSC) Act.
Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor Dominic Raab said: “Too many lives have been lost to reckless behaviour behind the wheel, devastating families." He also added, “We have changed the law so that those responsible will now face the possibility of life behind bars.”
We at Fleetmaster welcome this latest change in the law. Drink and drugs have a major impact on a driver's judgement and ability to drive in the correct manor.
